October 2018 marks 10 years since the first Round She Goes Market was held in Melbourne. It is Australia’s longest running preloved women’s fashion market!
Ten years ago, three friends (two of them sisters) decided there must be a better way to sell second-hand clothing. Better than getting up and freezing your butt off at 5am, but also use our combined business and marketing backgrounds to actually get customers there. We had come up with a great name too!
We ran our first market at the Club Tivoli in Prahran and the market was super-busy from the moment doors opened. Racks were stripped bare, and the thirst for the event was evident!
Over time, three became two and then one and I (Emma) have been operating the market solo since 2012. It was at that time that I decided to take the market to Adelaide and Sydney and have a crack at turning my side hustle into a job. Two more market ideas have sprung up since then too – The Makers and Shakers Market and The Slow Fashion Market.
Over the ten years, we’ve delivered over 40 events in Melbourne in five different locations and some of the participating stallholders have been selling with us since the very first market! We were Australia’s first market to launch an online version too! We were also the first market to partner with charities to donate remaining items at the end of the market day. This has become standard practice now at many other markets now too!
We’ve ridden out the over-saturation of fast-fashion chains coming and going too and the highs and lows of vintage trends (who knew that 90s would be back so soon in such a BIG way?). Right now though, it feels like the appreciation for preloved has never been stronger.
I’m proud of the great energy the market always has, I’m proud of the quality we’ve been able to maintain, the great friends the market has brought into my life and the community of women who have supported the event and made friendships and supported each other for so many years.
Thank you to everyone who has sold with us or come along to shop with us over the ten years. There is no market quite like Round She Goes, this has been possible through the community’s support.
Please join us at the 10th birthday market on Sunday 14 October at the Coburg Town Hall. Event details are here! There will be cake!
Here’s to another ten years!
